What is ROHS Compliance and Certification?

ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) was incorporated in a European Union Directive 2002/95/EC. The ROHS regulation prevents and restricts Electrical and Electronical products using certain hazardous substances from coming into the EU.

The substances include Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)

The directive also applies to the following products:

1. Automatic dispensers.

2. Consumer equipment.

3. Electronic and electrical tools.

4. IT & Telecommunications equipment (although infrastructure equipment is exempt in some countries)

5. Large household appliances.

6. Lighting equipment—including light bulbs.

7. Medical devices (exemption removed in July 2011)

8. Monitoring and control instruments (exemption removed in July 2011)

9. Semiconductor devices

10. Small household appliances.

11. Toys, leisure, and sports equipment.

Any company that is importing products into the EU must ensure that these products are ROHS compliant and are provided with certification from the manufacturer.
